I know quite a few families where they teach their kids at home. My perception was their kids finished grades faster and the families did more together. I checked some research done on the question and my perception was verified. In one large study:- In 1997, a study of 5,402 homeschool students from 1,657 families was released. It was entitled, "Strengths of Their Own: Home Schoolers Across America." The study demonstrated that homeschoolers, on the average, out-performed their counterparts in the public schools by 30 to 37 percentile points in all subjects.
- The race of the student does not make any difference.
- The more years a kid is homeschooled the greater their outperformance - 3 or more years they place in the 92nd percentile.
- In 1997 the average cost per homeschool student is $546 while the average cost per public school student is $5,325. Yet the homeschool children in this study averaged in 85th percentile.
- There is no correlation between state government regulations and the level of home school academic performance.
- Students taught at home by mothers who never finished high school scored a full 55 percentage points higher than public school students from families with comparable education levels.
- Grades 1 to 4 home school students perform one grade level higher than their public- and private-school peers. By Grade 8, the average home schooled student performs four grade levels above the national average.
These outcome were demonstrated in study after study.
