The 4th Way and Found Poems
One way that I have found useful to keep myself on the track of the 4th Way is to construct Found Poems from the writings of others on the journey, especially from the huge Commentaries of Maurice Nicoll.
I ask you again as so often
what work have you done
on yourself today?
have you noticed yourself
being very identified?
have you noticed yourself
being negative?
have you noticed yourself
laying up a lot of accounts
against others by criticising them?
seeming superior to them?
thinking they are fools?
have you noticed yourself making up
stories in a wild attempt to fix
the forever flexible nature of things?
have you been full of self-pity?
have you been gloomy and depressed
and useless to others?
have you spoken things mechanically
when you might have said things
more consciously?
has the day defeated you
or have you defeated the day?
have you leaked Force
or built up your energy-stock?
have you gone to the day
or has the day succeeded
in frog-marching you to it?
whatever you do is what you do
and can be used constructively
for the purpose of thinking

I am going to read and re-read that poem. Great choice, GQ.

Just wanted to bump this simple yet wonderful poem to the top. It is such a great experience to be mindful in the things one is doing and thinking all the day.
Goleman (1976) Gurdjieff meditators' brains showed cortical specificity, or the ability to turn on those areas of the brain necessary to the task at hand while leaving the irrelevant areas inactive. Schwartz (1975) stated that meditation practices can lead to heightened cortical arousability plus decreased limbic arousability, so that perception is heightened and emotion is simultaneously reduced, which he described as a "skilled response."

Thanks.
Phil, have you read In Search of the Miraculous?

No I haven't. The only Ouspensky book I have is Tertium Organum. Tell us more about it.

There are Gurdjieff study groups all over America. Just about every large city has one. Roy, do you lead one or are you a member of one?

No, Phil.
My take on them is that they are either useless or harmful. If you go to a JG Bennett derived school, you may learn a lot of good stuff. They are eclectic in their approach.
Gurdjieff's teachings are a form of what is called esoteric Christianity.
If you meld G with Jung, you get a fairly good representation of the psyche. When it comes to the Spirit, though, nothing beats Castaneda's Power of Silence. Must read that one, Phil.
Ouspensky never could have come up with Gurdjieff's teaching on his own. I don't quite know how anyone could have come up with it.
Do you want to read it? I was planning to reread it, as a matter of fact.

I figured you had started your own Gurjieff study group.

So, Phil, you will read it, then?
I have some other suggestions as well. Stuff about the Essenes.
